Is Your Child Ready to Have a Pet? Check the Signs of Readiness!

By: Drh. Mikeu Paujiah, Dipl. Montessori

Many children ask for a pet because they’re following a trend or tempted by cute animal videos on TikTok. Parents need to understand when the right time is and what signs show that a child is truly ready. In this article, we’ll discuss the indicators that a child is prepared to have a pet and the important role of parents in guiding them.

Signs That a Child Is Ready to Have a Pet

Here are signs that your child is emotionally and practically prepared:

1. Able to Stay Consistent

The child completes daily tasks like tidying up toys or watering plants without constant reminders.

2. Shows Care and Empathy

They pay attention when an animal looks tired, scared, or hungry. This is an early sign of empathy.

3. Not Afraid of Dirt or Mess

The child doesn’t feel disgusted by touching pet food, cleaning cages, or washing hands after playtime.

4. Patient and Gentle

They don’t throw toys at animals or force them to play. A ready child understands that animals have feelings too.

Let’s Recheck: Is Your Child Really Ready?

If your child shows most of the signs above, it’s likely they are ready to start learning how to care for a pet, with proper guidance from parents, of course.

Having a pet can be a valuable experience for a child, especially when done at the right time. Be sure to check the signs of readiness before giving in to their request.
