Spinosaurus, a colossal theropod, boasts elongated neural spines that form a towering dorsal sail. In certain species, these spines can reach over 6 feet (2 meters) in length, serving as the foundation for a striking structure that would tower above the water. The shape and purpose of this sail have long been debated. Some theories propose it was not a sail but a 'fatty-hump'. However, a comprehensive 2014 reconstruction concluded that the spines were insufficiently vascularized to support such a structure, suggesting they were likely covered in skin and used for display. The same study also indicates that its limbs were shorter than previously believed, appearing to be adapted for paddle-swimming, similar to early whales.

  • Prominent dorsal sail: Elongated neural spines
  • Sail length: Up to 6 feet (2 meters)
  • Adaptation: Semi-aquatic lifestyle
  • Skull shape: Long and narrow
  • Tooth shape: Conical
