BACKGROUND

Research and document proved that there are links between cruelty towards animals in childhood and crime, violence and antisocial behavior in later years. The links between cruelty towards animals and cruelty towards humans often have domino effects.

When adults don’t respect, neglect, abuse or hurt animals, it started desensitize process or loss of compassion in our children. They can get used to watch negligence, hurting, or even killing animals without feeling any reactions. Normalizing negligence and cruelty means that harassment has become a part of a child’s life and accepted as something normal. The lack of empathy caused dehumanization because it delayed a child’s emotional development and they won’t be able to actualize their full potential as an emotional matured adult.

We can break this cycle and replace it with empathy, respect, responsibility and compassion, which are needed to build a kinder and better society. Welfare education promotes knowledge, understanding, skills, manner and values related to animals but also encourage general sense. Empathy is believed to be an important element which often lost in society nowadays and a reason which inhumane, neglect and violent behavior based on.

THE BEGINNING

Education has been JAAN’s top priority since its inception. Because education equals change and cites one of Nelson Mandela’s words: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Afterwards, we started to draft the contents and develop the concept further. Followed by regular meeting to present our
progress and after 5 months of hard work, finally we are ready to set up a meeting with DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

Then, to celebrate this milestone and to socialize Public/Mass Education Program, JAAN held a launch event for this program at Jakarta City Hall (Office of DKI Jakarta Governor) – North Jakarta on February 7 2016 and it was a big success!

In 2017, parts of our education program were broadcast on big LED screens across Jakarta. We are still developing our program in 2017 to 2018. But because of lack of funding, we couldn’t make big changes so we have to put this program on hold. Since the beginning, education was always be main priority of JAAN. Because we understand that education equals change and to quote Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”

We started to design the concept for this website after JAAN had the opportunity to do a presentation for DKI Jakarta Governor about animal welfare.
