More Than Just Style: Ethical Ways to Carry Cats According to Animal Welfare Principles
By : drh. Mikeu Paujiah, M.M.
In the era of social media, we often see cats being taken out in transparent backpacks that display their entire bodies to the world. Cute? Perhaps.
But is it comfortable and safe for cats? Not necessarily.
Cats are highly sensitive beings. They need a safe space, minimal noise, and do not tolerate excessive external stimulation.
When carried in transparent bags in crowded places, cats may feel helpless, trapped, and experience severe stress.
As owners, we have a responsibility to ensure that every trip—no matter how short—does not become a traumatic experience for our cats.
Our desire to look “cute” on social media should never make our cats feel threatened.
The real question is not:
“Does the bag look cute?”
but rather:
“Is it comfortable for my cat?”
Cat Transport Protocol: Ethical & Cat-Friendly Practices
To ensure that every journey is safe and minimally stressful for cats, here are simple guidelines that anyone can follow:
1. Choose a Carrier That Provides a Sense of Security
Use a cat carrier that is partially enclosed, not fully transparent.
Ensure adequate ventilation and line the inside with soft fabric—ideally something that carries the cat’s familiar scent (such as a blanket used at home).
2. Provide Privacy During the Journey
Cover part of the carrier with a thin cloth to reduce visual stimulation.
Avoid direct exposure to bright light, traffic, or crowds that may cause panic.
3. Minimize Noise and Vibration
Avoid transporting cats on open motorcycles or in noisy vehicles.
Do not speak loudly or play music near the carrier.
4. Adjust the Duration of Travel
Keep trips as short as possible. If long-distance travel is unavoidable (such as intercity trips), allow time for breaks and observe the cat every few hours.
5. Introduce the Carrier Early
Train cats to become familiar with the carrier from a young age. Use it as a place for play or rest at home.
Offer small treats when the cat enters the carrier to create positive associations.
Closing: Ethics Must Come Before Aesthetics
Cats are not decorative objects. They experience fear, need security, and deserve comfortable experiences when taken outside the home.
The trend of carrying cats in transparent bags is not only unethical but also poses risks to their mental well-being.
Let us change our perspective.
It’s not about whether we look cute, but whether our cats feel comfortable.
It’s not about style—it’s about genuine, thoughtful compassion.
